Zalando will also discontinue operations at three warehouses outside Germany which are currently run by external service providers on behalf of Zalando and About You.

In a statement, Zalando said that this decision had not been taken lightly. “For over a decade, a dedicated team of around 2,700 Zalandos in Erfurt has been a core part of our success story and a crucial part of our logistics backbone”.

“We feel connected to Erfurt and the region and are committed to working with local authorities and civil society organisations to mitigate the impact”. The company announced that it had begun negotiations with the Erfurt Works Council on a Balance of Interests and a Social Plan to assist its employees through “this transition with integrity and compassion”.

Following the streamlining process, Zalando’s logistics network will comprise 14 fulfilment centres located across seven countries. The company has emphasised its commitment to investing in cutting-edge logistics technology and automation, as well as more sustainable practices, across its pan-European network.
