Bags Go Small this Winter

Fashion commentators believe that a new trend for smaller handbags will continue and that many women will use small bags during the day as well at evening receptions this winter.

In a report on the phenomenon in the Financial Times, fashion consultant Francesca Burns said that, for many women, as long as a bag can hold a phone, a lipstick and a credit card it is big enough.

She added:"They're an update and a great brand extension for people who already love iconic styles, They're also less expensive, so more people can afford to buy them. It extends the brand audience."

Bags mentioned in the feature included the Jade from Alexander Wang, a palm-sized bag in stingray leather, a black leather shoulder bag the size of an A5 sheet of paper, with feathers and gold stodding, form Alexander McQueen, and Michael Kors' burnt oragne petite shoulder bags with tassels. It also said some luxury brands, including Anya Hindmarch with its Black Carker bag and Mulberry with Alexa, Mila, Lily and Bayswater bags, are introducing smaller versions of existing core styles.

The chief executive of luxury fashion website My-Wardrobe.com, Sarah Curran, told the Financial Times that these small bags "marry elegance and femininity with a slight quirk, which continues to be a key trend".
