Conceria di Urgnano, 100% Recycled Crust

“The evolution of leather in a sustainable key is inevitable,” says Simona Crotti, belonging, with her sister Viviana, to the third generation at the helm of the tannery. The company was founded by her grandfather at the beginning of the last century and today it is an outstanding example of female entrepreneurship also thanks to the fourth generation which is already working, made up of women.

Specialized in the eco-tanning of leathers for the leather goods, footwear and fashion clothing industries, Conceria di Urgnano has made sustainability its strong point, addressing investment strategies towards an entire, fully traceable eco-sustainable production system.

Alongside vegetable-tanned and metal-free leathers, the new trend presented at Lineapelle is called “recycled”. “We have been working on the theme for years – continues the entrepreneur – and finally we could launch at the fair with a top leather, 100% recycled”. It is a real GRS (Global Recycle Standard) certified crust obtained by 80% from scraps of leather and 20% from plastic bottles recovered from water. The scraps are processed with a particular needle method without the addition of chemicals and adhesives: the result is an article looking like a fabric which, in addition to retaining the same performance characteristics of a traditional crust, can be coupled to other leathers according to common systems. “Recycled material represents the future and is a real, certified response to the classic tanning industry” concludes Simona Crotti. Finally, the next step of research is biodegradable leather. “We are carrying out studies, tests and analyzes aimed a developing a completely biodegradable product in a short time, but the path is still long and requires noteworthy investments.”
